This is a The first academy (then called a collegium) was piloted in July 1989 and refined for 1990 and 1991. Housed in an environment, rich in information, facilitative of innovation, and away from normal places of work, the Collegium provided an excellent opportunity for teachers to explore alternatives and to develop strategies for creating a positive future for their schools. Participants were identified through a competitive selection process which recognizes the excellence of their achievements in the classroom. Beginning in 1992, with the support of a grant from the Florida Department of Education, the Collegium became an Academy for Excellence in Teaching. The site was moved to Centennial Elementary School in Pasco County, a school that was well along in pioneering a change agenda consistent with the philosophy of the David Anchin Center. School was opened for ten days during the summer and teacher/administrator teams from a variety of school districts came to learn the theoretical basis for the change agenda and to observe the translation of these ideas into successful practice. A full statement of the change agenda is included in Inventing the Schools of Tomorrow. A fuller description of the Academy program is available in the document Centennial Academy. Key Benefits
